CROOM 50 MILER A SUCCESS! 3/22/08 Incredible Runners!

By Woody - FL UltraRunner

Thanks to Andy and all the volunteers. The Glow lights and clothes
pin reflectors were great! The food was great!! Everything was
perfect. Even the weather was awesome.

I had no idea I had another sub 9 in me. The third loop was tough,
but with the help of Nancy from Durham and Alan from St Pete (to be a
WS100 runner in June), we chugged it in. With 1.1 miles to go, we
looked at our watches and made a command decision to go for a sub 9
finish. Did I have the common sense to hold back 2 weeks before
Umstead? Naaaah... when I feel good, I go for it. Isn't that the
mentality of Ultra Running? Seriously, I have been on my feet a lot
in the past 2 weeks with a 40+ mile backpack hike (terminated early
due to bad weather) plus 3 of the 8 loops at Umstead (yes, I was
really there). I finished up my mini vacation with a run/hike up to
the top of Albert Mountain (5,240 ft) near Franklin, NC. I walked
and jogged 15 miles of the Croom course Friday night putting out
ribbons and signs, and a local redneck (thank God for the rednecks)
helped push my stuck van out of the sand while I was putting the last
sign out in the dark and watching flames from a fire 250 feet away.
Then after a quick shower at the trailhead, it was off to the
Miller's for Pizza and a real bed. Thank you Dan and Hazel!

I only heard of one complaint of someone seriously going the wrong
way. Apparently, someone coming out of Bundy's pit veered to the
left and went up some other unknown trail. During my 2nd loop, I
could kind of see how that might happen, but if he had raised his
head, he would have seen a ribbon to the right on a tree and several
more 50 ft ahead. I have concluded that no matter how well you mark
the course, someone will invariably go the wrong way. Also, at the
2nd and third loops, there were aid station volunteers there at
Bundy's pit insuring that no one would make that mistake again.

In addition to all the hard work put in by the race day volunteers, I
want to acknowledge the hard work put in by Dan Miller for cleaning
Beaver Gulch. There were some big trees that had to be cut there and
I know that required a lot of hard work. Also, Dan came up with the
idea of reflectors mounted on the clothes pins. He did a special
night run just to check out the reflectors and make adjustments to be
sure they would be visible. Dan also ran very good, breaking 9:30.

Andy and Jim and all the volunteers, you pulled it off!!! Again...
thanks for a great race.

Woody
